It all starts with an idea. It is the nature of the idea that it must see the dawn.
Fashion involves a lot of visual communication and understanding to execute ideas. Here is where the art of communication comes in, which involves design, pictures, sketches and other forms of illustration. Although not many know it, this art has evolved from over 500 years. From basic sketching on paper to doing it digitally with Adobe Photoshop and illustrator, Fashion illustration has become a major component of fashion design.
There are a lot of things we need to understand and master before getting into illustration and sketching. One of the basic things is the study and understanding of body proportion. This involves learning about posture, muscle tones and a lot more interesting things than what you have probably previously learnt about the human body.
A good way to start learning is that is by existing pictures and designs and tracing them out until you attain a certain level of comfort and confidence in the subject. Also note that style is a very important part of this part of the sketch and the human figures and given a tinge of style, even if it means overstating.
This is followed by putting the design out there and presenting the garment. All of this is part of mandatory learning when you have taken up a course in fashion design and don’t have to break your head about it before the course starts.
As garments usually are asked to be presented in a 3-dimensional form and also at an advanced level a designer will have to ve able to show the look and feel of the fabric, using design software is advanced, over physical sketching.
